Student Services
Personal Counselling
Counselling services are available to all students at CMA. The counselling approach used at CMA is strengths-based and solution-oriented. The focus is on building assets and competencies rather than just treating problems. Our goal is to help students to enhance their well-being, cultivate what is best within themselves and create conditions that enable our community to flourish and thrive.
Ms. Melahnie Moodie is the school counsellor at Coast Mountain Academy. She provides counselling services to individuals and small groups in addition to classroom workshops. Students and parents are welcome to schedule appointments with her on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday via email or in person.
Examples of areas that students can get support in:
- Gaining strategies to cope with stress/anxiety/depression and other mental health issues
- Improving study habits and organizational skills
- Mapping out plans for university and career exploration
- Solution-focused counselling for challenges relating to school, home, friends
- Increasing self-confidence and self-esteem
- Improving self-care and well-being
- Mindfulness practices
- Developing a growth mind-set
- Nurturing positive mind habits and resiliency
- Ways to deal with bullying and creating a positive school culture
Post Secondary Counselling
At Coast Mountain Academy our programming is designed to graduate adaptive and empathetic problem solvers who have mastered oral and written communications, critical thinking, and collaboration – the keys to success in post-secondary education and the rest of their lives.
We work with students to reach their fullest potential while they are with us, and equally as hard to ensure they gain access to their post-secondary programs of choice. By design, we expose students to a wide breadth of subjects in an effort to spark their curiosity and passion for learning, as well as interest in potential career paths.
Our first graduate went on to flight school after taking a small craft flight over local mountain ranges as part of a geology case study. Who knew a geology class would lead to a future career as a pilot but it has because of CMA.
At CMA we work with both the student and their parents on a path of exploration to help refine their post-secondary interests. This journey begins in middle school with volunteering, goal setting, character strengths, multiple intelligences, personality tests and recognizing the influence of peers, family, and communities on career choices and attitudes toward work.
In senior school, our post-secondary counselling program is primarily delivered by school counsellor, Ms. Moodie. She maintains an extensive resource centre, hosts university liaison visits, and offers application writing workshops. Ms. Moodie also works with students and their parents on course planning, post-secondary research, university and scholarship applications, and career planning to ensure the student and parents make informed decisions.
The success of our post-secondary counselling program is evident. Of our graduates who applied to university, 100% of them received admission offers to their first or second choice program including Engineering Sciences at the University of Toronto, Design & Architecture at the University of British Columbia, and Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria. Our graduates have also received District scholarships and university entrance scholarships at the University of King’s College, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Victoria, just to name a few.
