The CMA Story

Coast Mountain Academy is the realization of a longstanding vision for education in the Sea-to-Sky Corridor. The impetus for starting an independent middle/secondary school arose from the local communities’ desire to have additional educational opportunities for their children.

Geoff Park, owner of Camp Summit Outdoor Education Centre, and his partner, Daphne Radford-Park, had always talked about starting an independent school in order to further their commitment to the holistic development of youth.

This school was formally established in February 2011 when Geoff and Toran Savjord, former VP Operations and Development at Quest University, began to formalize their shared visions. David Greenfield, Principal of the Sea to Sky Gondola, joined the conversation and together they established the CMA Board, Advisory Council, governance model, and began to organize information sessions.

After an exhaustive search for a Head of School that attracted international applications, CMA was very pleased to name Mr. David Baird as our inaugural Head of School in January 2013. In September of 2015 we welcomed Mike Slinger as the Deputy Head of School, who took over as official Head of School in January 2016.

In September 2017, as we enter into our fifth year of operation there is much to celebrate. We are proud of our 10 graduates who have gone on to study at Universities in BC and the US. As we enter this milestone year, we have a very active CMA Parents Association, our current student body is now over 80, and we have a vibrant faculty team of 9 (some of whom have been with us since day one).

Our story is evolving each day as we work towards creating a truly exceptional educational experience for our students and the local communities. We will update this page over time and we hope to be able to include you in our archives as a student, parent, staff, faculty, or supporter of Coast Mountain Academy.
